Furniture Design - Beginners Summer School
Rock Galpin
This modern furniture design and model-making course is ideal for beginners with an interest in furniture who wish to explore the subject for the first time, or for those already practicing a related subject and wish to explore this exciting area of design.
The course combines both studio and 3D studio and workshop activities. You will learn how to work to a project brief, understand concepts and create sketches, working up your ideas with the help of the tutors before moving on to model making (the result of which will be the creation of a scale model). Therefore, this course is the perfect opportunity to practice the leap between generated ideas and three-dimensional reality.
The course is about experimentation with concepts, but also about the practical side of design such as grasping the idea of basic batch production processes and ergonomics. This is a practical course and the emphasis will be on an overview of furniture design and making rather than on the history of furniture design, although there will be reference to it.
By the end of the course you will have a new understanding of design and a portfolio of completed work and work in progress which you can then use for applying to courses in the future or as a spring board to enrol on our 'Intermediate' courses.
Rock Galpin is a London-based furniture designer and the 2005 winner of The Laurent Perrier Design Award.
