Granulation, Reticulation and Fusing with Silver

Granulation, Reticulation and Fusing with Silver

Paul Wells

The emphasis of this course will be on recycling and reusing scrap silver, tapping into the eco-jewellery zeitgeist.  Several methods of granulation will be explored including torch, and kiln-formed granules for the creation of regular and irregular shaped silver granules. Molten silver can also be free-formed in water to create more experimental forms.  These granules can then be applied to surfaces by fusing or sweat soldering techniques.  Reticulated textures on silver will be demonstrated, creating attractive surface distortions.  Students will complete several projects throughout the course. Although materials for the course are provided, students may wish to use this opportunity to use their own scrap silver. Suitable for all levels.

Paul Wells is a jeweller whose own work makes creative use of organic forms. He teaches on the BA Jewellery course at Central Saint Martins.
