Model Making for Architecture

Model Making for Architecture

Eiffel Wong Dip(Des) AA Dipl ARB RIBA, Jenny Sieg BA (Hons) Dipl-Ing

This course teaches basic techniques of building architectural models using hand tools. Architectural models are, just like drawings, a means of communication between architect and client, but can also be an important method of testing and expressing architectural ideas. They can also be used to analyse a site. While drawings can only transport information on a 2D plane, models can give an impression of the space in 3D. Different kinds of models will be introduced: analytical model, conceptual model, working model, section model and presentation model. Students will build their own model during the course. You will explore how to determine scale and size, choice of appropriate materials, level of abstraction and time planning. Photographs of the models can contribute towards a portfolio to apply to schools of architecture.

Eiffel Wong is a visiting tutor on the MA Industrial Design course at Central Saint Martins. He studied at the Architectural Association and works as an architect and a designer in his own practice in Berlin, Hong Kong and London. Jenny Sieg is an architect and designer with her own practice. She studied and worked in Berlin and London. Her dissertation was nominated into The Royal Institute of British Architects President's Medals 2000. She has been involved in teaching at universities in both Berlin and London since 2002.
