Packaging Design

Packaging Design

Sabine Fasching

This course is an introduction to packaging design. The course looks at the discipline of packaging design from a primarily three dimensional perspective, and will explore the aspects that make it such a vibrant, energetic and buoyant division of the design industry. It is aimed at giving you a fundamental understanding of what packaging design is about, what makes it different, why we need it, and what the success criteria are. You will gain an understanding of the whole of the design process, covering designing for mainstream brands and mass manufacturing, understanding a brief, generating conceptual design, developing an idea, the journey of the design process and communication. The course is structured to be interactive and involving, with a mix of tuition based learning and regular set tasks. You will also work on a main design project which will be taken from brief through to presentation, helping you learn how to communicate ideas and get your point across at every step of the process. The course is ideal for students about to go into design education, or for young designers wanting to specialise further or just explore the discipline.

Sabine Fasching graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2006 and straight out of college got a position at the London design studio Farrow. She has since worked on a wide range of projects from music packaging, branding, art direction, web design to restaurant interiors. Designing for clients such as Sony Music, EMI, HMV and the Design Council - she has set up her own studio in 2010.
