Design for Burlesque
Peter Towse BA
This course covers the exciting, expanding area of burlesque. Designing the costumes for burlesque is a new and thrilling area of design. It is very special because it encompasses the theatre, dance, sound, stage movement, and colour; the exotic and erotic. This course covers how to draw and interpret feminine bodies from the nude figure, how to design for the movement of the body, the importance of fabrication, colour and stage lighting design in conjunction with the costume design - and much more. Also covered is the history of burlesque from the 1890s through to the present and its global impact from Las Vegas to Tokyo to London and beyond! By the end of the course you will have created your first sketchbook crammed with ideas and be in a unique position to enter this neglected but fast-growing area of design.
Peter Towse is a practising artist with fifteen years practical experience of the fashion business. He teaches story boarding to MA film directors and was also area leader for fashion on the Foundation course at Central Saint Martins.
