Introduction to Acting for Camera

Introduction to Acting for Camera

Bill Britten

This workshop is essentially a practical 'hands on' acting class in front of the camera. Sessions will focus on the specific demands of working in front of a camera but the skills involved are relevant to all forms of acting. Sessions will include: work of the self (how do I come across on camera?), developing and expressing listening/reacting skills for camera, examining the role and function of continuity, adjusting vocal levels without losing dynamism, exploring the importance of the 'inner monologue' and thought process in close-up, adapting performance to the size of the shot. Sessions will also explore professional functions and working practice. Ideally, the participants should be actors who have experience of acting in the theatre, and maybe a little experience of acting for the screen.

Bill studied Psychology at Oxford, then trained as an actor at Central. As well as working extensively as an actor he has directed over 40 episodes of television drama, including Eastenders, Holby City, Dream Team, Night & Day and My Parents are Aliens. He has also directed TV films and short films, one of which was nominated for a BAFTA. He has been teaching Acting and Directing for Camera at the Drama Centre since 2003.
