Set Design for Performance
Gary Thorne MA
This course aims to introduce you to the creative process of set design for live performance. Course learning explores the designer's vision, creative and practical skills, effective communication and developing a critical eye for performance. Project work covers analysis of a script, to establish the scenic breakdown, and charactr breakdon chart, historical research, 2D and 3D creative interpretation and concept development, storyboarding, the scaled 3D model along with the role and responsibility of design pre-production and in production. You will finish with a combination of practical understanding of the requirements for set design and a portfolio of project work reflecting the designer's creative process. The course welcomes learners from a wide range of disciplines, those wanting to develop, diversify and extend their current creative experience towards set design for performance.
Gary Thorne studied fine art at Byam Shaw, theatre design with Motley and completed an MA in Public Art with UEL. He has worked as freelance set and costume designer for over twenty years. He is Head of Design at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art). As visiting lecturer his teaching includes Motley Theatre Design, Central School of Speech and Drama, and Rose Bruford College. Gary is author of 'Stage Design', 'Designing Stage Costumes', and ‘Technical Drawing for the Stage’, each published by Crowood Press UK.
