The Photography Course

The Photography Course

Chris Ould

Do you have the basics in photography but really feel you would like to get to grips with some of the technical and aesthetic issues of the medium? This intense two-week course will offer a range of projects for you to explore both on and off site, and includes optional visits to relevant exhibitions and galleries. During the first week of the course you will focus on getting the fundamentals right, from the taking of a correctly exposed photograph through to the 'final print' stage in the college's darkroom or digital suite. There will be technical sessions on the use of 35mm film/digital SLRs and larger format cameras in order to develop an awareness of the essential principles, techniques and picture making skills applicable to both digital and traditional media. Topics will include lighting on location, composition, camera control, traditional darkroom printing and digital enhancement using Photoshop. During the second week of the course you will be encouraged to develop your own ideas using the studio, darkroom or digital facilities. This will include a medium format portrait shoot in the studio using a variety of light sources and a range of lighting equipment, and an introduction to alternative printing processes and techniques, such as pinhole cameras. In addition to completing assignments and participating in the slide-show critiques of historical and contemporary artwork, each student will be encouraged to develop his/her own project.
