Dance Photography Course

Dance Photography Course

Hilary Shedel

This course focuses on capturing the essence and energy of dance.

Successful images of people are not just about technical ability, but developing a rapport with the subject, and by the end of this course you will feel more confident about both sets of skills.

You will work with professional dancers learning improvisation techniques, and choreographing shots specifically for the camera, while starting to develop your own particular style.

The course covers:

  • planning a shoot
  • basic lighting set ups that you will be able to reproduce after the course
  • becoming more ‘visually literate’ and being able to spot the decisive moment
  • directing a dancer / model in a shoot
  • model releases
  • copyright
  • editing techniques
  • shooting with available light in theatres / live events will be discussed
  • an introduction of the history dance photography
  • opportunity to receive feedback on your previous work

Predominantly a practical course this week is aimed at beginners with little or no experience of studio photography.  Experience of digital SLR essential.  Photoshop experience useful.

Although this courses concentrates on photographing movement all the skills learnt can be easily transferred to other fields. Anybody interested in photographing people but feel they lack the necessary directing skills will hugely benefit.

Hilary Shedel has over 20 years experience as a freelance photographer specialising dance and movement imagery for advertising and editorial markets. She has been a visiting Lecturer at CSM for the past 12 years and also teaches at Nottingham Trent University.  See www.shedelphotography.com for more information.
