Beginners' Photography

Beginners' Photography

Bill Blanco, Chris Ould

The course is for beginners who seek an introduction to both camera handling skills and black-and-white darkroom techniques, whether for personal enjoyment or for studying photography in the future. Topics will include camera operation, principles of exposure, film development, printing and picture content. Assignments and lectures on historical and contemporary artwork will explore the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. While digital cameras will be discussed, the practical part of this course will be devoted to working with your negatives in the darkroom to build printing techniques. By the end of the course you will have a pile of photographs, lots of mistakes and experiments, and a keen eye with which to continue your practice. Please note: This is not a digital course and only focusses on 35mm film photography.

Bill Blanco and Chris Ould are experienced tutors in the photography department at Central Saint Martins.
