Photography Portfolio
Chris Ould & Jet
The ability to conceive, develop, and complete an extended personal project is the mark of an advanced photographer. The rewards can be substantial: a place on a prestigious BA or Post-Graduate programme, a magazine article, gallery exhibition, or book publication.
This course is designed to help students cultivate greater direction and clarity in their image-making process. The course begins with an informal discussion that focuses on each students practice, influences, and working methods. This will then be followed by a series of critiques in which each student has the opportunity to present their work to the group in order to get feedback, and propose how they might progress towards their goal of building a successful portfolio. Each session will address topics such as finding subject matter that has personal relevance, the use of complementary media to enhance meaning, picture selection, sequencing, and final presentation. These will be supplemented by slide lectures looking at relevant photographs work, and technical workshops covering subjects such as preparing digital files for print or web based programmes, or fine-tuning darkroom printing techniques. The final part of the course focuses on another series of critiques looking at how each student’s work is progressing by revisiting their portfolio, helping them through the final selection and application process, and suggesting possible routes to take after the course finishes.
