Improve Your Photography

Improve Your Photography

Chris Ould

This course is intended for those wishing to gain more control over their photographic equipment and to learn how to take better photographs. During the course you will learn the core picture making skills applicable to both digital and traditional photography, receive demonstrations on how to tackle difficult lighting conditions on location, and manipulate light for mood and atmosphere in a studio environment. Through a series of assignments, class critiques, and slide lectures on historical and contemporary artwork, you will learn how to refine both your aesthetic and technical skills, whilst developing a more personal style to your work. The first half of the course is based around technical lectures, dealing with both black-and-white and colour photography, while the second half is practical and includes the option of spending time in the studio, college darkrooms working with traditional B&W materials, or in the digital suite learning to use Photoshop to enhance rather than manipulate colour images and prepare them for printing. Students should have an SLR / DSLR camera to get the most from this course, and it is ideally suited to anyone who has a basic understanding of photography.

Chris Ould is an artist and experienced tutor in the Photography department at Central Saint Martins.
