Digital Photography (Wednesday Evenings)

Digital Photography (Wednesday Evenings)

Brendan Olley and Tim Marshall BA (Hons)

This friendly and informal course is suitable for ambitious beginners who wish to take creative control of their cameras and increase their understanding of the medium. It places digital image making squarely within the more universal context of photography and teaches the principles of lens and shutter control common to all types of cameras along with the technical aspects (white balance, RAW files etc.) that are particular to the digital medium. The emphasis is very much on experiential learning and developing your ideas about photography - You will be expected to take lots of pictures! You will engage in briefs that explore aperture, shutter, composition, portraiture and studio lighting. The briefs will conclude with informal group critiques where you will be given feedback on your work. There is tuition on using Adobe's Bridge and RAW editor software as wells as an introduction to some of the more essential techniques in Adobe Photoshop such as working with layers, Levels brightness adjustments, black & white conversions and sharpening. The course strives to challenge how you think about photography and there will be a small research project and presentation designed to increase your appreciation of the mediums history and how it can be used to inform and inspire your own work. You will be required to bring your own digital camera along to this course.

Alternative Dates and Times
Many of our courses are repeated throughout the year. If the above dates is not suitable for you, or there are no dates showing for this session, then please choose an alternative session.

Please bring to the first session:

A digital camera.
A memory card reader.
A portable key-ring flash drive (4GB minimum) or other storage device.
A clear memory card.
You must be familiar with were the controls are on your camera - There is little standardization in modern cameras so subsequently there can be no escape from reading the instruction manual!
