Alternative Photographic Processes

Alternative Photographic Processes

Guy Paterson

As photography becomes increasingly digitised there has been an increasing number of artists and designers looking back in history in search of a more engaging form of final output. By introducing a series of alternative photographic processes, using the photographic image as a starting point, the course will examine and demonstrate the choices and print methods available that go towards producing tangible pieces of work. By underlining the interaction between image and base material, new processes are explored and creative departures encouraged. Liquid photographic emulsions will be used with art papers, fabric, glass and perspex. The latest advances in digital negative making will be used for contact printing processes such as Cyanotype, Van Dyke or Gum Bichromate on both fine art paper and fabric. Each process introduced will be accompanied by a brief handout and recipe, and you will be shown how to continue these techniques after the course with the minimum of specialist equipment. Some basic experience of working in a black and white darkroom will be of an advantage, and you are encouraged to bring imagery with which to experiment.

Guy Paterson is a print maker and public artist. He studied fine art at Central Saint Martins. Should you wish to find out more about his work, visit Guy's website at www.guy-paterson.co.uk
