Information Design
Angela Morelli
This course will introduce you to the bright world of information design where 'the intersection of image, word, number, art' (E. Tufte) enables designers to create splendid visions, to reveal what hides behind data and to address concise, unambiguous universal messages.
Aim of this course is to provide tools that are crucial in order to analyse, organise and present information effectively. The clarity and power of our message depends on the ways we structure the information we want to communicate. You will explore the ways in which we can organize information, you will realize that each way you choose can create new information and new understanding.
You will explore the world of non-verbal communication through pictograms and icons, the beauty of maps, the realm of typography, grid, layout and colour. You will go through the process of gathering data and translating those data into graphs, charts and maps that allow us to visualise the visible and the invisible.
The course is aimed at new designers, current students or any creative individual working in an environment that requires presenting information in effective ways in order capture the imagination of colleagues or clients.
Angela Morelli gained her MA in Communication Design from Central St Martins in London, where she specialized in information design. Her first degree was in Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and she has an MA in Industrial Design from Milan. She has collaborated with a number of research and commercial organizations in Europe and works in London as an information designer. She has been keynote speaker at international conferences on design and communication and is Associate Lecturer at Central St Martins.
