Illustration for 16-18 Year Olds

Illustration for 16-18 Year Olds

Sion Ap Tomos

Interested in exploring visual communication through image making? This course emphasises visual enquiry, innovative ideas and experimentation and gives a flavour of the BA Graphic Design (Illustration Pathway) at Central Saint Martins. Illustration sits between fine art and graphics and involves artwork needed for magazines, CD covers, books, cards, posters, the internet and other brief-driven uses. Emphasis will be on how to develop your ideas and your own visual language. Through a series of projects you will investigate line, colour, texture, montage and hand-made text to create characters, mood, action, settings and story continuity. You will conjure up images from your imagination, through research and by experimenting with materials, inventing ideas and bringing them to life. You will become more comfortable with observational illustration as well, while having fun doing both. We will look at successful illustrations and talk about what an illustrator's life is like. There will be group critiques and individual support. Your work could form part of a portfolio for academic entrance. This course is an ideal follow-on from the Graphic Design for 16-18 Year Olds, but can equally be taken alone.

Sion Ap Tomos MA (RCA) is a practicing illustrator and artist. A graduate of CSM and The Royal College of Art he has been teaching drawing and illustration at a variety of institutions for over 10 years.
