Graphic Design - Beginners Saturday Course
Ruth Sykes
Graphic design does not begin with switching on a computer: it begins with ideas. This course encourages you to use materials like pencil, paper, scissors and glue to develop your creative ideas, and is a 'computer-free-zone'.
Varied and fast paced, each week we explore a different area, for example: graphic ideas, visual research, typography, layout, poster design, bookbinding and photography. In class you are introduced to the area through diverse exercises involving both thinking and doing. You are given a graphic design brief each week which you are encouraged to complete in your own time to maximise your learning process. Constructive group crits help you develop your work throughout the course, which is taught with the spirit and enthusiasm of the Graphic Design degree course at Central Saint Martins.
This course is aimed at beginners to the subject who are willing to experiment and produce an inventive portfolio, either for an application for further study, or for those who just want to refresh themselves and exercise an enquiring mind.
Ruth Sykes is a co-founder of the REG design studio and is a graduate and associate lecturer of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins. Ruth is an experienced tutor at Central Saint Martins and also teaches Graphic Design - Beginners - Online.
