Graphic Design - Beginners

Graphic Design - Beginners

Brian Dixon

By breaking down the preconceptions of graphic design, this course encourages the development of ideas as well as an understanding of layout and typography. Starting with a number of short observation projects and continuing with a selection of diverse yet interlinking projects, the course will include observational drawing processes, constructive group crits and classroom activities with the enthusiasm of the BA degree course at Central Saint Martins throughout. You will also be required to complete certain projects in your own time to maximise your learning process. This course encourages those who are willing to experiment and produce an inventive portfolio, whether for an application to an HND or BA course, or is for those who just want to refresh themselves and have an enquiring mind. Please note that this is a computer-free zone.

Brian Dixon studied Visual Communications at Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland. Graduating with first class honours in 2005, he has since worked for graphic design studios in both Dublin and Vancouver, Canada. From 2009 to 2011 he undertook an MA in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins, focusing on the visual language of map-design. He currently combines freelance graphic design work with his PhD study, researching design practices relating to mobile-wayfinding technology.
