Book Jacket Design For Fiction

Book Jacket Design For Fiction

Andrew Pavitt

Despite the often-quoted maxim: "Don't judge a book by its cover" people often do, it is your job as a designer to ensure they make the right choice.  This course will enable you to understand the process of book cover design. You will respond to a brief and be taken through the steps required to produce your own book cover.

The course will teach you how to understand a written brief and the value of breaking it down into different components, and key themes

You will go on to idea generation, coming up with as many ideas as possible developing your own style page, with cuttings, inspirations, colour swatches and ideas that will inform your final design route.

The course will then consider the importance of typography and layout, developing your design idea to incorporate the title, author's name and publisher's logo.

The course will culminate with you presenting your final artwork, together with supporting material.  Time allowing you can start to develop further related designs that might form part of a series, that could be Author or genre related.

Throughout the course you will be shown examples of work by other designers for reference and inspiration. The tutor will also discuss how to approach Art Directors and clients and advice on presentation, as well as a critique of the work you have produced.

Please note computers will not be used on this course. Although you are welcome to bring your own laptop if required.

Andrew Pavitt is an illustrator and designer. His designs have featured on cards, wine lables, books and original artworks. His work can be viewed here: http://www.andrewpavitt.com/ and related blog at http://andrewpavitt.blogspot.com
