Painting and Personal Inspiration
Guy Noble
'What the world looks like' is an aspect of all artists work. As the world changes with time it is both necessary and exciting for another generation to get involved in producing images. This course helps you to discover what it is about painting that really excites and inspires you. May be you are interested in the language of painting, or, certain subjects move you more than others. Whatever it is this course will take you step by step through an examination of this process of discovery.
The first part of the course provides you with a basic understanding of the language of painting looking at colour, form, space and light. We see how artists have taken each aspect of the language and pushed it to extremes. How is a Fauve painting different from an Impressionist painting? Or a Lucian Freud different from a Francis Bacon? Are there bad paintings in the National gallery?
Gradually we will explore individually motivated projects that might involve: painting directly from life, from drawings, from photographs, using note-taking, found images or objects. Subjects could include: life models, still life, interiors, a view from a window, the street or the city. Together with Guy you will look at artists that have relevance to the project you are engaged in so that the
great artists of the past become useful and inspiring.
Although this is a beginners' painting course it is suitable for anyone interested in why artists choose particular subjects. Life models may be used and optional out of college assignments may be set.
Guy Noble is a practising artist who has exhibited internationally. He studied at the Byam Shaw and in Spain and Italy. For more information go to
