Observational Painting With A Difference
Bettina Reiber
Most of us have a vague idea of what a painting from observation will look like. This course offers you a range of short projects that will enable you to expand your range of creative responses. We will look at different responses within the group and discuss the approaches to observational painting that they contain. During the final two days you will develop an approach that most appeals to you into a more sustained piece or set of pieces. We will look at pictures of artworks and engage in discussions about the relationship between painting and photography, and what we mean by ‘representation’ and ‘realism’. This will be a lively course with much experimentation giving you the opportunity practically to try out new ways of responding to a range of set ups. You can work in oils, acrylics or in mixed media. Some previous experience in painting is helpful, whether it be observational or abstract.
Bettina Reiber is a practising artist, who works mostly in painting and drawing. Some of her work is based on collaborations. She is a curator and exhibits widely. She publishes papers on aesthetics and art theory. She holds a BA Fine Art (painting) from Central Saint Martins and an MA in Aesthetics and Art Theory.
