Mixed Media Painting

Mixed Media Painting

Caroline List

If you are interested in a mixed media approach to painting, particularly within the contemporary field, this course is for you. It will be particularly beneficial if you want to develop a body of work for your portfolio, or apply for a higher level of study. Structured projects will be set exploring various movements and approaches to painting, helping you work within a framework while giving you the freedom to generate your own ideas. On a practical level the course will cover a variety of technical approaches from mixing your own pigments, wax encaustic painting, photo transfer montage, masking techniques, acrylic paints and mediums, oil paints and mediums, impasto painting, and working on different supports such as MDF boards, aluminium, canvas, plaster grounds, gesso grounds and stretcher making. Alongside the practical projects, an introductory slide talk, 'Painting as a Visual Language within the 21st Century', will give you a broader theoretical understanding of notions of painting. Basic materials are provided.

Caroline List is a practising artist who has  been a visiting painting tutor at Chelsea College of Art, Royal Academy of Arts  and  Design and Bath Spa University.  You can view examples of Caroline's work at www.carolinelist.com

Preparing source material to bring to the course:
You should bring a collection of source material eg. photographs, postcards, magazine cuttings and other visual imagery which is of interest and may be incorporated into your work.

Please bring Black & white & colour photocopies/laser copies (A3 and A4). These photocopies copies should not cost any more than 50p for black and white or £1.50 for colour (use your local copy bureau or Rymans). Do not buy really expensive shinny photocopies, matt quality basic paper prints works better for photo transfer. Please make sure your photocopies have a good tonal range with very dense blacks and saturated colour.
