Illustrating Animals

Sion Ap Tomos

One of the most interesting, diverse and technically satisfying of subject matters, this course is designed for both novices and people with some experience but who wish to further explore the subject and develop their skills. Beginning with an in-depth look at the work of a variety of artists and illustrators work we will then look at the different challenges of drawing various types of animals from the domestic dog and cat to the gorilla and lion, looking at anatomy, movement and character. Technical instruction will be given throughout designed to improve your observational skills and handling of a variety of materials as well as guidance on exploring types of depiction that you are particularly interested in, such as animals in children's book illustration, character design, editorial and wildlife illustration. The course will include one to one and group discussions, a museum visit and location drawing in addition to the practical studio time.

Sion Ap Tomos is a practing illustrator and artist who has been teaching drawing and illustration at Central Saint Martins for seven years.
