The Self-Portrait
Tania Denton
"I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best." Frieda Kahlo, Mexican painter, 1907-1954
Students will look at a cross section of self portraits by artists such as: Rembrandt, Gwen John, Frieda Kahlo, Lucien Freud, Gilbert & George, Chuck Close, Marc Quinn, Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin.
We will explore the notion of the self-portrait from the representational to the abstract, looking at different areas such as likeness, mood, personality, and psyche. You will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, photography and mixed media.
You will develop skills and techniques required to produce a range of images with confidence.
Tania Denton is a fine art graduate from Central Saint Martins, and a practicing artist based in London. She has extensive experience in teaching, including: life drawing, foundation in drawing and painting.
