Art Criticism
Andrew Marsh
So you want to criticise art? This course is for those interested in how looking at art can be translated into a published article in a magazine, newspaper or on the web. This is an introduction to the process of art criticism, from looking at art and putting appreciation into words to marketing and promoting written work for publication. The course is an opportunity to explore the possibilities for developing an individual approach to creating critical commentary and writing style, and to discover the opportunities for publishing work. Aimed at beginners and intermediates the course is for those who wish to personalise or improve their skills and for graduates who want to increase their understanding of the art press. Students will visit exhibitions in London, discuss ideas and gain feedback on written work, and develop knowledge of the relationship between art, galleries and the press.
Andrew Marsh has a BA in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art, and an MA in Fine Art Administration and Curatorship from Goldsmiths. He teaches on BA Architecture: Space and Object and BA Communication, Criticism and Curation at CSM. He is a freelance gallery manager and has curated and managed exhibitions and events in London, Birmingham, Dusseldorf and New Delhi (to mention a few); he writes for 'Flash Art', various artists' monographs and other publications.
