Pop-Up Books

Pop-Up Books

Alexandra Czinczel

This course is for everybody who wants to learn how to make a book that opens up into a 3D object. We will investigate how three different types of 3D books are constructed: pop-up books, carousel books and tunnel books.  Students will gain experience in paper engineering, including techniques of cutting, creasing, folding and gluing, as well as learn about how to choose suitable paper and card for their 3D book projects. We will explore the structures and mechanisms commonly used in pop-up books and make our own straight and curved pop-up shapes as well as pull tab mechanisms to make things slide or rotate, starting with simple pop-ups and moving on to more complex designs. Students will be able to finish two or three books to take home, or, if they prefer, a collection of pop-up cards.  Some experience in paper folding (for example origami) would be useful, but this course is also suitable for complete beginners.

Alexandra Czinczel is an artist who has been making books since 1998. She regularly takes part in international artist book fairs. She also teaches the Artscom course "Bookbinding for Artists".
