Drawing Nature

Drawing Nature

Sion Ap Tomos MA (RCA)

This is a studio-based course designed for anyone interested in developing and improving skills in the depiction of natural forms. As well as plants, flowers and natural foods there will be objects found on beaches, forest floors and other natural habitats that will be gathered for you to study, explore and enjoy throughout the week. Specific instruction and guidance will be given on depicting the various forms and improving observational and technical skills, with regular group discussions and analysis of various artists' work and styles of depiction. Different media will be explored, from charcoal to watercolour, and guidance given on constructing a drawing, composition and developing individual styles and techniques. There will also be location visits with additional instruction on how to depict trees and other larger plant types. This is ideal for beginners and intermediate students.

Sion Ap Tomos is a practising artist and has been teaching drawing on the BA Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins for five years.

Alternative Dates and Times
Many of our courses are repeated throughout the year. If the above dates is not suitable for you, or there are no dates showing for this session, then please choose an alternative session.

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • at least two sketchbooks, one small one which can be used comfortably whilst standing and a larger one (roughly up to A3 size) for longer more ambitious drawings. It could be a simple soft cover notebook, a reporter's notepad a collection of loose papers of different kinds or a moleskin for example, as well as a more traditional hardbound sketchbook, whatever you are currently familiar and comfortable with. By all means bring a sketchbook that you have already been working in. The same applies with drawing materials, whatever you are familiar and comfortable with though by all means bring materials that you haven't used before but are eager to try out. Other materials for you to use will be discussed as the course progresses.
