Depicting Colourful Characters - Drawing, Illustration, Painting
Bill Wright
Rastafarians, jugglers, punks, eccentrics, drag queens, liveried doormen - think of London's wealth of visually rich characters - characters not typically available to be drawn or painted. You see them - from the tattooed to the tuxedoed to the tart - but how often would they stand still long enough for you to capture them with pencil, pen or brush? We'll bring authentic colourful characters into our studio (well, an actor might play the part of the tart!), offering you a chance for artistic study in depth, rather than just the fleeting glimpse possible in the everyday world. And, as our models, they'll be happy to strike characteristic poses or take us through action in slow motion or 'freeze frame.' We'll spend some time looking at depictions by established artists and discuss technique and what we produce in class. But mostly we'll be working with our intriguing characters, creating what will no doubt be vibrant art-work in whatever medium you like.
An ideal class for building a varied portfolio of drawings, illustrations or paintings and for learning to depict characteristic action, body language, costume, make-up, hair-style, and attitude. Or for just plain fun of artistic exploration. Open to all levels.
Bill Wright is a practising artist and has taught drawing, illustration and design in the US and UK. He is currently an Associate Lecturer on the illustration pathway of BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins.
