Art Criticism
Claire Nichols
So you want to criticise art? This course is for those interested in how looking at art can be translated into a published article in a magazine, newspaper or on the web. This is an introduction to the process of art criticism, from looking at art and putting appreciation into words to marketing and promoting written work for publication. The course is an opportunity to explore the possibilities for developing an individual approach to creating critical commentary and writing style, and to discover the opportunities for publishing work. Aimed at beginners and intermediates the course is for those who wish to personalise or improve their skills and for graduates who want to increase their understanding of the art press. Students will visit exhibitions, discuss and network, gain feedback on written work and develop knowledge of the relationship between art, galleries and the press.
Claire Nichols is an artist and a curator. Exhibitions include the David Roberts Art Foundation, PS1, Whitechapel Gallery, the ICA and Art on the Underground. She teaches across BA Part-Time Programmes at the London College of Fashion.
