Mixed Media Painting
Caroline List MA (Hons) Fine Art
If you are interested in a mixed media approach to painting, particularly within the Contemporary field, this course is for you. It will be particularly beneficial if you want to develop a series of mixed media works or add to your portfolio if wanting to apply for a higher level of study. Structured projects will be set exploring various movements and approaches to painting, helping you work within a framework while giving you the freedom to generate your own ideas.
On a practical level the course will cover a variety of technical approaches from mixing your own pigments, wax encaustic painting, photo image transfer, montage/collage, masking techniques, acrylic paints & mediums, oil paints & mediums,alkyd resins, impasto techniques, to working on different supports such as, MDF boards, aluminium, canvas, textured grounds, gesso grounds and primers.
Alongside the practical projects and demonstrations there will be a visual slide lecture examining: 'Beneath The Surface of contemporary Painting' which will give you a broader theoretical and material understanding of painting in the 21st century.

Alternative Dates and Times
Many of our courses are repeated throughout the year. If the above dates is not suitable for you,
or there are no dates showing for this session, then please choose an alternative session.
Please bring these materials to the first session:
- Brushes a variety of sizes, synthetic bristle which are softer, hog hair,which is corse and for texture and hake or goats hair, which is softer, for blending
- Rollers, sponge roller for primer
- Palette knives
- Sponges
- Storage jars
- Rags
- Olive oil soap for cleaning brushes
- Hair conditioner (for keeping brushes soft).
NOTE: A variety of materials will be provided for the initial sessions, such as canvas, primers, wax, pigments, acrylics, oil paints. If and when these run out you will have to buy extra materials such as, timber for the stretcher-making, canvas and paints.
Preparing source material to bring to the course:
You should bring a collection of source material eg. photographs, postcards, magazine cuttings and other visual imagery which is of interest and may be incorporated into your work.
Please bring Black & white & colour photocopies/laser copies (A3 and A4). These photocopies copies should not cost any more than 50p for black and white or £1.50 for colour (use your local copy bureau or Rymans). Do not buy really expensive shinny photocopies, matt quality basic paper prints works better for photo transfer. Please make sure your photocopies have a good tonal range with very dense blacks and saturated colour.
