Modern Art History
Tark Butler
The course offers a chronological path through some of the most significant shifts in art practice through the 20th century to the present. The aim is to introduce you to debates in art and art history, offering an engaging exploration of stories and disputes that have coloured art practice in the past 100 years. This course will help to equip you with the critical tools needed to approach the themes, ideas, practices and works of modern art and contemporary art. Although designed to follow on from the Introduction to Art History that runs at the National Gallery, it is suitable for those who have not studied previously. The course will be taught at the Tate Modern and at the college.
Tark Butler, after completing a BA (Hons) in Art and Design, has had many different jobs in industry and freelance, working both as builder and designer of various projects. Included in this time were several large-scale exhibition design jobs for a television facilities company. Tark became a full-time artist in 1996 working from his own studio.
