Collecting Contemporary Art

An introduction to the business of collecting contemporary art. This course will explore various dimensions of how art is bought and sold. It will include visits to the back-rooms of galleries and provide access to key corporate and public collections and consultancies. The course will examine what to buy, when to buy and how to go about it, looking at key strategies employed by galleries and institutions in spotting new talent and building up their collections. Advice will also be given on how individuals can gain access to the latest artists and trends.

Andrew Marsh has a BA in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art, and an MA in Fine Art Administration and Curatorship from Goldsmiths. He teaches on BA Architecture: Space and Object and BA Communication, Criticism and Curation at CSM. He is a freelance gallery manager and has curated and managed exhibitions and events in London, Birmingham, Dusseldorf and New Delhi (to mention a few); he writes for 'Flash Art', various artists' monographs and other publications.
