Monday 20 to Friday 24 August 2012
Week 1: London - the Capital of Fashion Innovation
London's instinct for innovative fashion springs from its rich history of street style, from 1970s punks, through to the East London club-kid scene today. World renowned institutions, like Central Saint Martins, breed creativity and this is explored in the alternative publications like Dazed and Confused and I-D magazine, available to buy from vintage street sellers like Portobello Road or Brick Lane, and represented in high end boutiques and concept stores like Dover Street Market. Even the British high street has the most original offering of affordable fashion in the world.
Key research skills and an open mind are needed to unlock a city this vast and varied. Over five days, through group discussion and exploration you will be guided through the city's hidden fashion secrets from underground galleries, new designers studios, cutting edge PR showrooms and all the while gathering a personal portfolio of sketchbooks, mood boards and pictures, to motivate further projects, or simply as a documentation of a week spent in an inspirational city.
Over week one of this programme, you will be set research projects and you will be involved in group discussions supported by visits and field trips that will allow you to experience the contemporary fashion world. You will explore the influences that fashion creatives take from the visual world around them.
Lateral thinking and personal development is addressed through research and discussion. At the end of this project you will have a deeper understanding of how to express your ideas through a variety of media and how to structure a research project, and articulate your ideas through visual presentation.

Paris (5 day course)
Monday 27 to Friday 31 August 2012
Week 2: Paris - City of Fashion and Luxury
The French creative industries are renowned the world over for their innovative and sophisticated qualities. The attitudes that influence the fashion sector, and that are likewise reflected in the design industry, are rooted in the history of French culture. France has been a centre of luxury since the time of Louis XIV, who built Versailles, gathered expert craftsmen from around Europe, and created a fashion culture around life at court. In the 19th century, haute couture developed in Paris, which has been a leading city of fashion design for the last 150 years. Today the city continues to nurture French and international designers, both the major global brands and more avant-garde, individual designer-driven labels.
Week two of this programme looks at what is happening today in fashion and in creative design, as well as in innovative retail concepts and the luxury experience. The week includes talks from experts in the field, interactive exercises, and visits to museums and shops with the opportunity to debrief after these visits. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of how the French creative industries draw inspiration from the past and the present and a lively perspective on life and business in Paris today.
Themes to be explored during the week and overall structure will include:
• History of French fashion
• Trends and prospective
• Retail spaces: from product to experience
• Fashion and gastronomy - different expressions of good taste
• Staging a fashion show
Through a series of visits we will explore the established luxury stores; contemporary designers; art galleries and museums; emerging neighbourhoods and new expressions of creativity.
Outcomes
By the end of the two weeks you will have created note books full of research, photographs of your findings and you will have gained new knowledge about the fashion world. Daytime activities can be supported by your own exploration and enjoyment of London and Paris during the evenings.
