Machine Knitting

Machine Knitting

Berni Yates

This course aims to bring together people of all abilities and disciplines with a passion for textiles, with the shared interest of experimental domestic machine knitting. You will be taken through basic techniques, using standard yarns (provided), and then research your own ideas towards creating experimental pieces. You will be given the opportunity to experiment and explore your ideas through two dimensional and three dimensional knitting sculptures. By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of experimental, forward-thinking, raw ideas and a collection of knitted sculptures to be used in future work, as well as a refreshed awareness of your own creative thinking. Students are asked to spend time before the course starts collecting samples of yarns of an unconventional nature.

Berni Yates is a knitwear consultant for the fashion industry as well as a regular Associate Lecturer on the BA Textiles course at Central Saint Martins. She also directs and produces fashion shows for various companies, colleges and museums such as the V&A, Crafts Council and Greenwich Maritime Museum.
