Contemporary Textiles from Old

Contemporary Textiles from Old

Sophie Gorton

This is a creative and stimulating workshop which breaks rules, inspires creativity and challenges the 'norm'. Through deconstructing old garments and textiles you will produce pieces of textile work for fashion or interiors. This hands-on workshop is aimed at people who want a chance to experiment and 'play' with different print techniques and textural processes. For inspiration you will be looking at existing traditional and modern textile patterns, sketch books and original works. You will also be introduced to basic issues surrounding sustainability in fashion and textiles and to the work of existing 'sustainable' designers. By the end of the course you will have exposed a screen for printing and understood basic print techniques. Through experimentation with colour, print and texture you will produce and take home several finished and stimulated pieces of informed work and an exciting sample/ideas sketchbook.

Sophie Gorton worked in film and theatre before launching her own fashion label in 1990 which ran for 15 years. The collection exhibited at London fashion week and sold in Liberty, Harrods and Selfridges. Now, Sophie designs and produces bespoke pieces for private clients and is a lecturer in fashion at Central St Martins. Sophie Gorton is a member of the Ethical Fashion Forum, Fashioning an Ethical Industry and Environmental Justice Foundation.
