The Central Saint Martins Museum and Study Collection was first established in its present form in 1993. It gained Registered Museum status in 2001.

In addition to the wide range of material shown on this database it includes an archive of documents on the history of the founding colleges, the Central School of Arts and Crafts/Design (1896-1989) and St. Martin’s School of Art (1854-1989), as well as Central Saint Martins from 1989. There is also a large collection of Teaching Books, a collection of Illustrated Books, some bound journals, and monographs on individual alumni which can be found on the University of the Arts on-line public access catalogue. www.arts.ac.uk/library/opac.htm (formerly the TALIS catalogue).

The database contains some 5,000 entries, 2,000 of which have digitised images. The images were initially made possible by a grant from the JISC Image Digitisation Initiative (JIDI) and the addition of images and metadata is ongoing. The Collection has benefited from major external support from a number of sources including the Leverhulme Trust, the Sasakawa Foundation, the Arts Council of England, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the National Art Collections Fund. This has upgraded storage, provided funds for conservation and improved the database as a tool for research.

The College has a programme of research and study based on the Collection which has generated a number of exhibitions and publications. Publications related to the Collection include: Object Lessons, Lethaby Press and Lund Humphries, 1996; The Silent Screen, Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, 1999; Making their Mark, Herbert Press, 2000; Picture this: the artist as illustrator, Herbert Press, 2005. Anyone wishing to purchase any of these publications should contact the Administrator at the above address.

The College has a policy of adding work by former students and staff to the Collection by purchase and donation. The Administrator would be very pleased to hear from anyone considering donating or selling work.

The images and information presented on this database are all the copyright of the Central Saint Martins Museum Collection and where appropriate individual copyright holders. They may be used for private research and study purposes only. They may not be copied, altered or amended in any way without first gaining the permission of the copyright holders.  If you wish to use an image from the Collection please contact the Administrator.  The Collection is regularly available for study and research from Monday to Friday by appointment with the Administrator.

The Collection is available for study and research from Monday to Thursday 10:00am - 5:00pm. If you wish to visit the Collection please contact the Museum at 020 7514 7146 or museum.collection@csm.arts.ac.uk

Every effort has been made to trace the copyright holders of the images on the database and to provide accurate information on all database entries. If there are omissions or inaccuracies we would like to be informed so that the necessary corrections can be made.
