Fashion Illustration Techniques

Dual City Courses - London Milan

Tutors: Alexis Panayiotou and John Booth (London) and Lee Pring (Milan)

London (9 day course)

Monday 9 July to Thursday 19 July

Good fashion illustration conveys a mood, a fabric and an attitude.  There is no right way to do it, a good illustrator finds their own style through hard work and plenty of practise - and that is exactly what this course will offer.

You will have the opportunity try a variety of different media, to experiment with different techniques and draw models in all kinds of poses and attitudes.  As well as having a shot at sketching on the street - capturing that look with just a few key strokes.

The course will include collage and will investigate creating mood, setting and experimentation with the figure and clothes through this technique. The course will start with the basics and you will see your confidence and ability improve as it progresses. Students of all levels with an enthusiasm for fashion illustration and a desire to develop and practise their skills are welcome. The teaching will encourage students to form your own creative responses to the model.

Fashion Illustration Techniques and Making the most of your creativity visually

This course aims to enable fashion design students, or aspiring ones, to showcase their ideas in the most visually effective and attractive ways, even if they don't have a natural aptitude for drawing. This will also include being shown how to make working drawings (or 'flats') clear and readable.

The students will be given a project to follow involving research and design, and practical work where they'll create and embellish a fashion item.

During the course the students will be fed with plenty of inspirational material, as well as being given talks on fashion, art and illustration from the 20th century and taken on visits to fashion zones and the most internationally influential fashion stores in Milan.

The work they will have completed by the end of the course will be comprised of their finished drawings and designs in a portfolio they will have made themselves, sketchbooks and their fashion piece. All this will be shown off in the final presentation.

The students will be encouraged to work hard and take a serious but playful approach to their work.

Tutors:

Alexis Panayiotou and John Booth (London):

Alexis Panayiotou is a fashion illustrator and tutor on the BA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins.

John Booth graduated from Central Saint Martins with a BA Honours in Fashion Print. Whilst studying he worked for John Galliano and Zandra Rhodes where he developed a passion for colour, pattern and line. He is currently working at a London based fashion studio and also teaches fashion illustration at Central Saint Martins.

Lee Pring (Milan):

Designer Lee Pring was born and educated in London, where she grew up enjoying the exciting and stimulating ambiance of the 1960s and '70s before moving to Italy, where she has worked thereafter, always in the fashion industry.

Lee studied 4 years at Wimbledon and Walthamstow schools of art before winning a place at the Royal College of Art where she graduated with a Master of Arts degree.

Lee has worked with one of the most prestigious fashion houses in Milan - Cadette; one of the companies largely responsible for turning the city into an international fashion. During her time there, she worked with Karl Lagerfeld and Walter Albini (who both collaborated with the house), designed collections for them, and followed all their publicity campaigns - working with some of the most famous photographers, and styling and supervising the graphic presentation. Following that fruitful and important period, she went on consulting for top-level luxury ready-to-wear lines. She also worked simultaneously for many years in a design studio producing trends and predictions for colour and fabric, which also researched for new techniques.

She is currently monitoring the press for D'Management Group, the company that handles the world's most famous supermodels, who include Naomi Cambell, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer.
