Financial support

The Drama Centre is not a rich school. Nevertheless, the alumni network, The Friends of the Drama Centre, established two decades ago with substantial donations from Pierce Brosnan and Sir Anthony Hopkins, endeavours to support students in need. In addition to their own funds, The Friends also administer each year a number of scholarships awarded by the Leverhulme Foundation to Drama Centre students . One Leverhulme Bursary may be awarded to an incoming BA student who holds a previous degree (ELQ) and is therefore denied the usual state funding. Other Leverhulme Bursaries are available on a competitive basis to students in the advanced stages of their courses. Drama Centre students also have a very strong record of winning competitive awards open to drama school students from across the UK, such as the Laurence Olivier Bursary (DCL students were successful in this award in each of the past five years); the Lillian Bayliss Award and John Gielgud Bursary, and the Reeve’s Foundation Awards. Thus, in 2008-9 the Friends disbursed some twenty bursaries and welfare support, totalling over £30,000, while DCL students were in receipt of another £20,000 in the form of competitive bursaries and scholarships.

The Yat Malmgren Bursary

From 2009-10, the Friends of Drama Centre London will award an annual Yat Malmgren Bursary to the value of £4,000. Named after one of the founding fathers of the Drama Centre, the renowned dancer, movement director and teacher Dr. Yat Malmgren, the Bursary will be awarded to a second or third year BA student at the Drama Centre who has demonstrated excellence. In view of Yat Malmgren’s profound interest in world culture, preference will be given to applicants from outside the UK.

Drama Centre Foundation Bursaries

The Centre also offers three bursaries for part or all of the fees to some students of the Foundation in Performance. Details will be sent to you on application and can also be found on the Foundation in Performance page of the Drama Centre website.
