International Centre for Fine Art Research

International Centre for Fine Art Research (ICFAR)

Central Saint Martins, Chelsea, Camberwell, Wimbledon

Director: Claire MacDonald

The International Centre for Fine Art Research at the University of the Arts London promotes and supports collaborative and critical fine art practice across the University and works with a wide constituency of artist practitioners and doctoral research students engaged in practice based fine art research.

ICFAR is one of eight research centres at the University of the Arts London, and the only centre specifically focused on fine art practice based research. While research at UAL is principally conducted through colleges, and doctoral students are admitted through colleges, ICFAR's role is to work across the University, as an active hub for collaborative research and the generation of new kinds of connectivity. The Centre networks locally, nationally and internationally to bring artists and researchers together through forums that develop practice and thinking, from closed, intimate workshops to public discussions and laboratories.

ICFAR is currently developing a number of inter-related themes and focuses, including:

. Publication and archiving as sites of artists' enquiry

. Research into artists' processes, practices and methods

. Post-graduate pedagogy and models of doctoral research

The Centre aims to actively engage with a wide range of communities in the arts and is developing a series of national and international partnerships. These include: University of Ulster; Cal Arts; Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich (hgkz); The Drawing Room, London; University of the Arts, Berlin; Van Abbemuseum, Netherlands; Museum Van Heedendagse Kunst Antwerpen (MuHKA)

The Centre also supports UAL associate initiatives, many of which are well established. These include:
